Carolina Hotchandani in Poets & Writers Debut Poets Feature

Our 2023 Perugia Press Prize winner, Carolina Hotchandani, is featured with her Perugia collection The Book Eaters in Poets & Writers Magazine in their “Performing the Future: Our Nineteenth Annual Look at Debut Poets” article, published in the January/February 2024 “Inspiration Issue” in print and online. Congratulations, Carolina, and thank you to Poets & Writers and India Lena González for shining a light on debut poets and the presses publishing them! You can watch the celebration of this year’s cohort of poets and their first books in a virtual reading that was held on January 25, 2024.

In writing about the ten debut poets chosen this year, González focused “on the past, present, and future aspects of the following ten collections—both temporally and in the collapsing and conflation of the chronological that often takes place within art.” About Hotchandani, González wrote that she “present[s] the delicate poetics of death, exploring a ‘before-after binary,’ as Hotchandani puts it, holding space for the constant transformations of life.”

Poets & Writers has also spotlighted our virtual book launch of The Book Eaters in their “Poets & Writers Theater,” reposting the video of our event featuring Hotchandani, Perugia poets Jennifer K. Sweeney and Lynne Thompson, and poet Catherine Barnett.

The debut poets celebrated the honor in a group reading online on January 25, 2024. The virtual event included readings from the poets and a conversation about their debut books, their influences and inspirations, and their individual paths to publication.
